LabCraft in TENT

This weekend I helped out with the Craft Council's new LabCraft exhibition, which previewed at the design show TENT in Shoreditch, London. It was a pretty cool exhibition, looking at how modern digital 'crafts' like CNC routing, CAD and rapid prototyping, are beginning to be utilized by designer-makers. There were some witty interpretations of this contemporary theme, for example Michael Eden's Babel Vessel #1 used a QR code as a central part of its design. Digital also met natural in Nina Tolstrup's Branch Out, where branches had been scanned in and then recreated in iron using CAD. Textiles weren't left out either; digital prints made appearances, and textiles structure were blown up to reveal exquisite levels of detail and new perspectives in both Gary Allson and Ismini Samanid's Woven Wood and Chae Young Kim's Knitted Room.

The LabCraft exhibition will be going on tour from the end of next month. I suggest checking it for a good dose of innovation and beautifully designed and made objects. You can find more details on the Craft Council and LabCraft websites.

Checking out the rest of TENT, one thing particularly stood out to me was headpieces by Honoyo. Cyberpunk style eat your heart out!

Alas, I did not get to the Craft Council's Origin show, that was happening just around the corner at Spitafields market. Did anyone see it?

All I want for Christmas is colour

Was pottering around in the National Galleries (just off Trafalgar Sq, London) yesterday, and came across this shiny book in their shop:

I was pretty impressed at what looks to be a comprehensive guide to understanding colour - always a good thing for a designer to have! Maybe I'll ask for it for Christmas.....

Photobooks & an intriguing catwalk

The photobooks for our NETS exhibition arrived today! They look absolutely lovely (and a bit art gallery-esque with their white covers). One has gone whisking off to the north of england already, to be in place in time for NETS exhibition private view on the 1st October.

Also saw a rather intriguing article in London's Metro this morning (not your usual source of fashion/creative news.......). The story was on spanish designer Duyos sending models aged 60+ down the runway to show their S/S 2011 collection. I'm not so sure on the make-up, but the idea is definitely fantastic and refreshing in how fashion continues to break own bizarre boundaries:).

You can read the Metro story here: Metro: Old models hit the catwalk for London Fashion Week

A new collection!

I’m very happy to say GingerBread’s newest collection – Post:Modern – is now on the site! The new hats strike an interesting balance between our older, flamboyant couture headwear and newer, casual styles such as Level Headed. I hope you all like them - drop us a line on our Contact page to let us know what you think.

In producing this collection, I am hugely indebted to Chris (as always) for his hard in helping with everything GingerBread, and also for leading on our awesome Catwalk London phootshoot. This shoot also couldn’t haven’t happened if it weren’t for the amazing talent and time given by Stormy Aiken (of Stormy Couture Photography), Erika Wilson, Cyan Cheung, Sophie Gore and Ann Hoang – so a big, big thank you to you guys!

There one image from the shoot we haven’t put on the GB site (there just doesn't seem to be a right place to put it!....), so I thought I would share it here, as it's a really cute shot. All the images can be seen together in our photobook, which will be accompanying our hats in the NETS exhibition.

Now to contemplate the next hatty adventure....
